The Mary Valley Rattler is a heritage steam train experience that has long been on my wish list of things to do in south-east Queensland.
On our week away at Rainbow Beach, our daughter had one day of Uni which she was able to do online in our holiday house. This turned out to be a Wednesday, which worked in perfectly for the rest of us to head to historic Gympie station for the 3 hour trip to Amamoor and return.
The trip is one hour each way, with an hour at Amamoor for lunch and a chance for rail enthusiasts to watch the engine being turned. On the way, you will travel through typical Queensland hinterland.
We all enjoyed the day, and I particularly liked the heritage features of the train …
… and the station.
Ha! I used to call my first car ‘Shake, rattle and roll’ – great time for a rail trip through the countryside…

Haha. I’ve had a few cars like that.

What a fabulous way to see the countryside, no matter the age. When I was 10 I do an almost cross Canada train trip with my brother and Mom. It was an extraordinary adventure for a farm girl.
