Yeah, yeah, everyone has a bucket list of places to go. That’s easy.
What I want to fill this bucket with are iconic or unusual things to see and do. Things that might seem obvious and things that might not be so well known.
The idea started during a coaching session when my boss asked me what my next goal was. My answer?
“Eat Turkish Delight in Turkey.”
So now I want to hear your suggestions. Here’s some of mine and some that have been suggested by others. As you might gather from these, we’re not the most adventurous people in the world, but maybe your suggestion will get us out of our comfort zone.
Hit me with your best and brightest ideas. On the off chance I’ve done them, I’ll add them to the list with a tick. I think I need to because it looks a bit sad at the moment … as if we haven’t done much at all. Well, we have, but I’m not going to list every place we’ve been and everything we’ve done. That would just make you yawn.
If you like this list, you might also enjoy My Leaky-Bucket List.
- Eat Turkish Delight in Turkey
- Climb The Monument in London (I’ve been there 3 times and still haven’t managed this one. A good excuse to go back, just in case I need one.)
- Eat Peking Duck in Peking (It just wouldn’t sound the same if I said Beijing.) Thanks for this one Phoenix Tears Healed
- See a wild kiwi in New Zealand
- Cycling tour in Italy (This one could be a real challenge as we’re not cyclists and not even very fit.) Thanks for the suggestion. Wish us luck Sue Slaght
- Drink sake on Mt Fuji – and again Phoenix Tears Healed
- Coast to Coast walk in UK
- Gingerline
- Climb an active volcano in Chile (Volcan Villarrica) – thanks for the suggestion unfinishedtravel
- Walk the Kokoda Track
- Walk “The Way”
- Build a snowman. Yes, OK, I know, this is a pretty ordinary thing. But for someone who grew up and still lives in the tropics and sub-tropics and has never seen snow falling this is a fairy tale.
- Eat Welsh cakes in Wales. I had never heard of Welsh cakes, though I have been to Wales. Thanks for the suggestion and for following Sallyann
- See the Aurora – Australis or Borealis … or both!
- A long term rental in a small village somewhere in Europe. I would have the countryside around me and be able to walk into town to buy the fresh local produce, meet the locals and learn the language.
- A trip to the moon.
- reread a favourite childhood book in the place it was set – I think this is my favourite suggestion so far. Thanks anabuscaglia for this and the next few.
- Choose a major river and visit all major cities in its path
- Eat a “pastel de nata” (similar to an egg tart) in Belem, Portugal
- Watch the sunset from Coyote rock In San Pedro de Atacama in Chile
- Machu Piccu and the Galapagos. I don’t want to die without seeing those blue-footed boobies.
- Swim with the water buffalo in the Mekong (not quite as gross as it seems) – Thanks, Cheryl, for this one.
- Watch a movie set in another country and relive sections of it. The 3rd of Cheryl‘s suggestions that I’m adding. I’m skipping getting caught in a sandstorm in the Sahara. I have a bad feeling about where that sand will end up. I prefer getting caught in the rain in Paris.
- Sail across an ocean. Thank you to saltygardener for this one.
And the ones I’ve ticked off. It’s pretty short. Note to self: Must try harder!
√ Drink champagne in Champagne
√ Drink Guinness in Ireland
√ Climb the 3 bridges: Sydney Harbour (√ ); Story Bridge, Brisbane (√ ); Auckland Harbour (one day). I’ve decided to tick this one off, even though I haven’t done the Auckland bridge. I had the opportunity to do it but when it came to the crunch I realised that it didn’t really hold any meaning for me, other than adding a tick. I’m glad I did the other 2 and one day I might do Auckland but won’t be too upset if I don’t.
√ Spend time walking in the jungle at night looking for all sorts of creepy crawlers. Another from Cheryl.
Climb an active volcano in Chile (Volcan Villarrica)!

I loved the idea of suggesting things for your bucket list that I can’t stop thinking of things to add: – reread a favourite childhood book in the place it was set e.g. read Heidi while in the Swiss Alps – Enjoy a glass of Champagne while in Champagne, a glass of Cognac while in Cognac, etc. – Choose a major river and visit all major cities in its path ; Ride on the bamboo train in Battambang, Cambodia ;
And now I will stop….

Thanks for these great suggestions. I’m going to add some of them to my list. I particularly like the idea of rereading a book in the place where it’s set. Now, if I can just decide on the book …

Swim with the water buffalo in the Mekong (not quite as gross as it seems), experience a sandstorm in the Sahara, drink with the cowboys who come into town every weekend on horseback (Jardin, Colombia), spend time walking in the jungle at night looking for all sorts of creepy crawlers, watch a movie set in another country and relive sections of it… and the list goes on and on. I love this idea!!!

I could go a little crazy with this idea so I tried to refrain myself! It gets the creative juices flowing and that mixed with my travel obsession can be downright scary 🙂

Hi there I love the idea of an adventure list driven by eating stuff – my kinda list! and am glad to report am doing fairly well on your list so far 🙂 My first suggestion is to eat your way along the Santiago de Compostela walk, the second – I don’t see any sailing adventures here, can we tempt you to add crossing an ocean?

Thank you. “The Way” (have you seen the movie?) is a dream I will probably never fulfill but is always in the back of my mind. I was thinking of closing off my list for the moment. I seem to just add things and never cross them off – though I still do lots of things that aren’t on the list. But I do like your suggestion of crossing an ocean. I wonder how I would do it. It’s on the list.

Feed the pig a beer in St. Croix, Virgin Islands. It used to be real beer but animal rights activists considered it cruel so now they use non-alcoholic beer. The grass hut open air bar is in the northern part of the island.

I love pigs. And beer. So this sounds great. I’m not closing off my list but have decided not to actually add anything to it until I manage to cross a few things off. So this is top of the “invisible” list. The list of things that will go on the list when I list more things. Thanks for visiting.

For me it’s always been Cuba (drink a Cuba Libre in Havana!). It opened up to American cruise ships this year and we cruised from Miami and loved it!
