A VERY long weekend … a beautiful surprise

A girls’ weekend in Paris that turned into a 7 week holiday.

Eltham Palace was recommended to me for the beautiful spring gardens, particularly the tulips, but it was the elaborate, art deco interior that stole my heart.

It also seemed like a good way to use the last day of my English Heritage pass. And it would have been if the pass hadn’t expired yesterday. Ooops. Oh well, I’d already arrived before I realised so paid the entrance fee and went in.

I toured the house first. I had no expectations as I knew nothing about this property. I was absolutely entranced by the beautiful Art Deco interiors and the history of the Courtauld family.

From the entrance hall, with its walls depicting scenes from the couple’s favourite cities and where the Courtauld’s served cocktails …

… to the upstairs with its elaborate bedrooms, bathrooms and galleries …

… views of the medieval Great Hall from the Minstrels’ Gallery, and later from the floor of the hall …

… Stephen Courtauld’s library …

… Virginia Courtauld’s boudoir …

… and the map room …

… then back downstairs to the Italian drawing room …

… and the dining room …

… then down to the basement to see the billiard room …

before heading back up and out to the gardens …

… I loved it all.

Pop back next week for some views from my walk around the stunning grounds.

Thanks for travelling with us. We'd love to hear what you think.
