I had no idea there was a Space Centre in Huntsville, Alabama.
After two relatively quiet days this sounded like a great place to visit.
When I say “relatively quiet”, I do of course mean that they were dominated by the weather.
We spent the time driving home from Pigeon Forge watching rather nasty storm clouds and preparing to pull into the nearest McDonald’s to take shelter in their fridge in the event of a tornado. Well, at least that’s what I was told. I’m still not sure if this is a real thing or not but I wasn’t prepared to take any chances.
The next day we went for a drive around Chickamauga and visited the little Walker County Heritage and Train Museum. Like many small, local museums it is full of interesting stuff but lacking in labelling and context.
If you ask nicely, they might let you play with the train set, though.
And perhaps you’ll see the steam train go through.
The US Space and Rocket Centre, on the other hand, has excellent displays of spacecraft and space-related technology which makes you appreciate how much has changed … and, in some cases, how much has stayed the same.
Well worth the trip and, necessarily, a good rainy day activity.
